Duncan Gutteridge did illustration work for Sega back in the early 90’s, including the Streets of Rage 2 box art, an Ecco the Dolphin illustration and every image in the Sonic 2 1993 calender seen above. These images were also used on other pieces of merchandise such as the Puffin Adventure Gamebooks, posters as well as a tie I own.
Duncan was attending the MCM Expo London Comic Con this weekend, displaying the original calender and prints alongside his current illustration and portrait work.
I had a good chat with him and he told me the illustrations he did were intended just for the calender, so Sega were a bit cheeky using them on other merchandise though he didn’t mind as the exposure was good. I also found out that all the illustrations, while given a lot of creative freedom, were all based on Sonic 2 levels, meaning the jungle and city images may just have been based on cancelled zones Wood Zone and Genocide City.
Safe to say these images were a big part of my childhood and it was great to meet the man behind them. The image of Oil Ocean Zone was always a favorite of mine in particular.
(Another note: The Sonic 2 image seen inside the calender is a different illustration to the one seen on Sonic 2’s box art. According to Duncan he was requested to re-draw the art, the original of which was by Greg Martin.)
I’m sure a lot of people will recognise this man’s work from the awesome pin-ups from STC, especially those who had the giant Oil Ocean poster!
